Diversity, equity, inclusion and intersectionality are interrelated concepts that mean different things in various contexts, epochs and places. Regenesys Corporate Education holds these concepts as core values that are quintessential to the ethos of the company as well as to its curated corporate learning solutions for clients but also in tandem with the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, which, in its Bill of Rights (Chapter 2) “[…] enshrines the rights of all people in our country and affirms the democratic values of human dignity, equality and freedom”. This article critically examines the South African context in which the concepts diversity, equity and inclusion and intersectionality find meaning, defines what these concepts mean to us, and outlines how they define our ethos.

South Africa: a divided nation

Renowned South African writer and scholar Jonny Steinberg articulates in an article published by Business Day that “the freedom South Africans acquired in 1994 was mercurial and slippery. Politically, the changes were dramatic. The electorate expanded overnight to include every adult. But the structure of society stayed much the same.” Steinberg’s observation reminds us of the reason for why it is necessary to discuss and implement transformation policies which carry terms such as diversity, equity, inclusion, and intersectionality: we need to change the inherited structure of the past in which many are excluded.

Although substantial efforts have been made in the country regarding the social and political project of “transformation”, persistent inequality remains a problem. Moreover, unemployment, particularly among the youth, is growing. According to Stats SA, 43.4% of people between the ages of 15 and 34 are unemployed. This is a serious cause for concern given that this age range makes up more than half of the country’s employable workforce. In order to “transform” a society or an institution, it is necessary to deploy diversity (whereby a range of voices are heard at the table from black to poor, to women, to climate change activists, to LBGTQI+, civil society groupings, and community based organisations members), inclusion (making their voices heard), and equity (everyone gets a slice of the pie). These concepts which are part of a loud, robust and noisy democracy are central to how we integrate different levels of emotional, physical, psychological, spiritual, and other interpersonal intelligences into our work.

Diversity, intersectionality, equity and inclusion: what we mean

For Regenesys Corporate Education, diversity means not only having a diverse staff on board along race and gender lines, but also includes diversity of leadership styles, political leanings, ethnic, religious and cultural differences in carefully curated corporate learning solutions. This then would involve incorporating the concept and practice of intersectionality in learning materials. Intersectionality, in the broadest sense, is a concept which recognises the multiplicity of selves of people’s race, class, gender, sexual orientation and able-bodied/disabled status among other gazes.

The concept of equity is often misconstrued with equality. To deploy the concept of equality is to allocate the same resources or opportunities to individuals or groups of people. Equity on the other hand recognizes that each person has different circumstances and allocates the exact resources and opportunities needed to reach an equal outcome. Regenesys Corporate Education believes in recognising individuals intersectional experiences in its commitment to equity. Inclusion refers not only to the inclusion of liberal voices in learning materials but also to the inclusion of a diverse range of people across race, gender, sexual orientation and differently-abled individuals in decision-making processes. The intersections of views and gazes from multiplicity engenders richness in the work and learning environment which is enriching rather than homogeneous.

Watch this space for more insights into how all these concepts: diversity, equity, inclusion and intersectionality are incorporated and plays out different tunes in our learning materials.

These changes have necessitated corporate communication professionals in South Africa to be attuned with corporate communication best practices and trends as well as contextual background of social, political and economic phenomena amidst which they operate. That is, corporate communications in South Africa cannot be divorced from the politics of the country’s involvement in Russia’s war on Ukraine, economic downturn, disinvestment, the importance of women empowerment, difficult race relations and xenophobia. Awareness of context is maintained through relationships with the news media.

The internal and external stakeholders of South African companies have multicultural, multi-ethnic and multilingual individuals representing diverse personal backgrounds, experiences, values and ethical approaches. Diversity and intersectional approaches to leadership in a South African context must be reflected in marketing and public relations outputs for South African companies to succeed.

Corporate communication professionals must also maintain wholesome relationships with local and international media houses, and, be equipped with sound knowledge of the principles of effective corporate communications. Some companies have their own in-house communications teams, while others outsource communication responsibilities to public relations or marketing companies. The lines between public relations and marketing have become blurred especially in the digital age, where the two overlap or merge.

What is Corporate Communication?

Corporate communication is defined as ‘the overall planning, execution and evaluation an organisation’s communication with both external and internal publics – groups that affect the ability of an organisation to meet its goals’, according to James Grunig. Corporate communication encompasses a wide range of relations between an organisation and its stakeholders in order to enhance the effectiveness of an organisation. These relations take on many different forms but broadly fall within three categories:

Public Relations(PR) – PR concerns the curatorship of a brand’s image by conveying messages to the media and to the general public. This includes crisis management. The professional body for corporate communication in South Africa is the Public Relations Institute of Southern Africa (PRISA), a non-profit organisation that has been accrediting PR and PR-related qualifications for the past few decades.

Marketing – Also referred to as customer relations, marketing covers communication with the general public as prospective and real-time customers. Integrated communication, which is critical for success of an organisation, refers to having a consistent narrative and voice present across all platforms. Clarity of the rationale for the organisation, unity of organisational procedures and organisational purpose, and of what the organisation does must be integrated for successful business operations. That said, integration is a continuous organisational pursuit and not merely a quick-fix solution to marketing management. Integration produces integrity because an organisation that is seen as a whole rather than as an compendium of autonomous functions. Each output of corporate communication must be carefully curated to deliver memorable, clear, and focused messages that align with the company’s values and purpose.

The intentions of corporate communication are to build the company image, market the company’s products or services; maintain a positive reputation in its industry, and bridge information gaps between employees and management. We had the opportunity to have IORBF SA Chairperson Nokuthula Ndlovu, IBM Consulting Financial Services Associate Partner Charlene George, and Mkosi Group CEO and Founder Zama Mkosi to come and share their insights on authentic leadership, vulnerability, and gender in the business world.

With the CEO of Regenesys Corporate Education, Kapil Jaggeth, as the host, they were able to highlight the importance of authentic leadership, challenges women face, bias and discrimination, misconceptions, cultural diversity as well as emotional regulations. They also touched on many other themes and issues that are critical to the experiences of women in the workplace.

Over the course of the discussion, the panellists shared their personal stories, discussed their strategies for success, and offered advice and inspiration for women aspiring to leadership roles in any industry. Let’s take a closer look at some of the key takeaways from this masterclass and explore how women can apply them in business today.

Challenges Women Face in the Workplace
Despite significant progress in recent years, women continue to face a wide range of challenges in the workplace. For starters, women remain underrepresented in positions of power and influence: according to Fortune 500 data, women make up just over 10% of CEO positions. This lack of representation can make it difficult for women to advance their careers and gain access to important networks and resources.
Furthermore, women often encounter bias and discrimination on the job, whether it’s in the form of unequal pay, microaggressions, or outright harassment. Women of colour, in particular, may face even greater barriers to success, including a lack of access to capital, intersectionality and a dearth of role models and mentors who look like them. All of these factors can contribute to stereotypes and misconceptions about women’s abilities and potential, creating additional obstacles to career advancement and success.
There are also internal challenges and inner monologues that women go through, and Zama noted that self-awareness is a trait that is critical for leadership. How do you judge that self-awareness? Firstly, yourself and how you define those things that you’re aware of about yourself is actually what’s going to determine whether you’re going to make it or break it.

What can women do differently?
According to Charlene, “Be yourself! Do your own dance”, which reminds us to embrace our uniqueness and not to compare ourselves to others. It’s easy to get caught up in trying to fit in or conform to societal expectations. Aside from this not being the case, how can women embrace being authentic? Zama stated that knowing yourself, being confident in who you are is essential and, if you’re not confident in who you are, you’re going to be susceptible to how other people view you.
The other misconception is that women of colour in the earlier days who were in leadership were in positions that were for the sole purpose of window dressing. Nokuthula noted that some women land in positions where they’re not prepared for, based on certain quotas that must be met and they learned in those roles. She made an example of a time where she found herself in a role where there was no induction or introduction so she had to make a decision that either she’s going to blame everyone and complain, or she’s going to navigate.
She advises that you should read the room and sense the objective of your presence. If you find yourself in a situation where you’re expected to prove that females can’t do it, her tip is not to waste your energy trying to prove them wrong. Instead, focus on winning the people over and understanding their objections.

Charlene points out that tokenism still exists in corporate South Africa. Some companies lack the ability to develop and support non-white females. While meritocracy is important and people with the required skills should be in positions that fit them, development should not be ignored. She suggests that if a black person lacks a skill or two, they should be given the necessary support and guidance to help them grow. Otherwise, the transformation of the workplace will not be possible.

When is the Best Time for Leadership to be Taught or to be exposed to Leadership?
“Leadership starts at home,” Nokuthula stated. “We need to teach leadership at home such as giving equal chores for both boys and girls.” Indherani added that we must ensure that in our homes there’s gender equality in the way we’re raising sons and daughters. She further added that we need to empower men to accept strong women around them.

This discussion serves as a reminder of the importance of creating a supportive and inclusive environment for women in the workplace and the need for continued progress towards gender equality.

Below is a video of the entire event for you to view.

Written by Neo Webb

Boldly Hers: A Celebration of Women's Resilience and Leadership

A whopping 87% of organisations have low business intelligence (BI) and analytics maturity, according to Gartner’s research.

According to Statistics, today we live in a world where a staggering 91.9% of organisations have reaped measurable value from investments in data and analytics in 2023, three in every five organisations leverage data analytics for business innovation, 56% of data leaders are boosting their budgets this year, and the landscape is bracing for the creation of up to 1.4 million new jobs in data science and analytics between 2023 and 2027, mastering Data Analytics emerges as an indispensable skill in today’s rapidly evolving market. This shocking revelation isn’t just a concern for those in tech-centric roles—it’s a wake-up call for professionals across every sector. From finance to marketing, a sound grasp of data analysis isn’t just a commendable skill—it’s rapidly becoming an indispensable one.

Microsoft Power BI: Transforming Data Analysis for Every Professional

Picture this: A marketer, with zero programming experience, seamlessly pulls vast amounts of consumer data and, within moments, crafts a visually compelling report highlighting areas of opportunity. On the other end, a financial analyst deciphers complex patterns to predict stock market trends with stunning accuracy. Both scenarios were unimaginable a decade ago, but with tools like Microsoft Power BI, they’re today’s reality. So, what changed? Data. The amount of data generated daily is unfathomable. Raw data, in its myriad bytes, is much like a novel in a language one doesn’t understand—a treasure trove of knowledge locked away. Enter data analysis.

Navigating the Ocean of Data: The Rising Demand for Data Literacy

Historically, the realm of data interpretation was reserved for seasoned software engineers and tech aficionados, but the paradigm shifted. As business strategies became more data-driven, the demand for these skills spread across sectors. Whether it’s finance professionals predicting market shifts or HR executives assessing the efficacy of recruitment strategies, data analysis emerged as the linchpin.

Why? Because data-driven decision-making isn’t just about reducing guesswork—it’s about foresight. It’s about anticipating market changes, understanding consumer behaviour, and fine-tuning business strategies in real time. It’s about not just navigating but commanding the complex corporate seascape.

Structured Learning: Tailored Courses for Modern Professional Toolkit

Yet, diving into data analysis without guidance can be daunting. While tools like Microsoft Power BI have made the task more intuitive, a structured learning approach is imperative. That’s where the Regenesys Corporate Education’s PL-300: Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst programme comes into play. From the fundamentals of data representation to advanced analysis techniques, we provide a comprehensive toolkit for the modern professional.

However, it isn’t just about the immediate skills and insights you gain. Investing time in understanding data analysis tools like Power BI equips you with an unparalleled edge in the job market. As businesses scramble to bridge the data literacy gap highlighted by Gartner’s findings, professionals with these skills will find themselves in high demand.

Moreover, with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning weaving themselves into the business tapestry, data analysis proficiency isn’t just an asset—it’s a shield against obsolescence. As roles evolve and the demand for data-centric insights burgeons, those equipped with the right skill set will find themselves not just surviving but thriving.

Discerning the Essential: Beyond Professional Insights to Intrinsic Value

Beyond the job market and career progression, there’s a more intrinsic value to this knowledge. In an age characterised by information overload, discerning what matters is paramount. Data analysis is not just about professional insights—it’s about cultivating a mindset that seeks patterns, correlations, and meaningful narratives in a world brimming with noise.

Real-World Scenarios: Building Competence with Power BI

As we delve deeper into the world of data analysis, let’s consider a day in the life of a non-technical professional equipped with this skill.

Sarah, a healthcare manager, starts her day by reviewing patient feedback from the previous month. Historically, such feedback would be skimmed at best or even left unread due to its volume. Today, using Power BI, Sarah visualises patterns, immediately identifying that wait times have surged on Wednesdays. Without needing a data scientist or a month-long audit, she’s pinpointed a problem in real time. By the week’s end, scheduling adjustments are made, improving patient satisfaction measurably.

Now, let’s shift gears to Rahul, a sports journalist. Earlier, he depended on pre-fed statistics for his articles. Now, he dives into raw data, crafting compelling narratives on player performances, and drawing comparisons unseen by others. His pieces don’t just report—they analyse, providing readers with insights that turn them into loyal followers.

These scenarios underscore a pivotal truth: data analysis isn’t a mere tool; it’s a lens that transforms one’s perspective, amplifying vision, and clarity in a cluttered world. For Sarah, Rahul, and countless others, it’s not about heavy coding or spending hours on end with spreadsheets. It’s about harnessing the power of platforms like Power BI to make informed, impactful decisions.

Gateway to the Future: Mastering the Intricacies of Microsoft Power BI

In recent years, the surge in demand for data-driven roles has been astronomical. LinkedIn’s 2022 Emerging Jobs Report highlighted ‘Data Analyst’ as one of the top roles experiencing growth. Notably, this growth isn’t restricted to the tech sector—it’s sprawling across industries, highlighting its universal appeal and necessity.

However, with every profession emphasising data analysis, the competition for expertise in tools like Microsoft Power BI intensifies. That’s where our PL-300: Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst course distinguishes itself. Designed with a blend of theory and practicality, it caters to both novices and seasoned professionals. Our curriculum is rooted in real-world scenarios, ensuring that once you’re through, you’re not just certified but truly competent.

One might ponder, “Is this shift towards data permanency?” The answer lies in the increasing integration of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, the expansion of digital touchpoints in our lives, and the relentless pursuit of optimisation. Data isn’t just a passing trend—it’s the currency of the future.

The Omnipresence of Data Analysis

Now, some may feel that their profession is insulated from this data revolution. To them, we pose a challenge: Identify a role, any role, and we’ll showcase how data analysis can revolutionise it. From fashion designers predicting trends through historical data to lawyers assessing case outcomes based on past verdicts, data is omnipresent.

To thrive in this new era, one doesn’t need to transform into a programmer overnight. Instead, it’s about recognising the value of data, understanding its impact, and taking proactive steps to stay ahead of the curve. It’s about leveraging platforms like Power BI to derive insights that were once deemed unattainable.

Unlocking Potential: The Key to Thriving in the

The digital age offers immense potential However, to unlock it, one must possess the key—and that key is data analysis. As the chasm between data-driven organisations and their counterparts widens, the choice is clear: adapt or risk obsolescence.

Now, the pressing question isn’t whether one should embrace data analysis but how soon one can. And for those poised on the cusp of this decision, our course offers more than just instruction—it offer a gateway to the future.

For those seeking to master the intricacies of tools like Microsoft Power BI and to truly harness the power of data in their respective fields, our PL-300: Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst programme presents an invaluable opportunity. No longer can a manager in a non-financial role afford to say, “Finance isn’t my department.” The intricate web of global commerce, with its myriad of financial intricacies, demands that every manager, irrespective of their primary role, has a foundational understanding of finance.

The Hidden Cost of Ignorance

Imagine a scenario where a product manager, brimming with enthusiasm, launches a new product line. The marketing is on point, the product is of high quality, and customers are excited. However, without a clear understanding of the financial implications, including cost structures, pricing strategies, and cash flow implications, the product could become a financial drain, rather than a profit centre.

This is not a mere hypothetical. Real-world examples abound of companies that had promising products but faltered due to financial missteps. Often, these missteps were not in the finance department but in other areas where managers lacked financial insight.

Why Should a Non-Financial Manager Understand Finance?

Strategic Decision Making: Financial literacy equips managers to make decisions that align with the company’s financial goals. Whether it’s choosing between vendors, launching a new product, or investing in marketing, understanding the financial implications can be the difference between success and failure.

Effective Communication: When managers understand financial jargon, they can communicate more effectively with the finance department, ensuring that strategies are financially viable, and resources are allocated optimally.

Risk Management: Financial knowledge allows managers to identify potential financial risks in their decisions, helping them to mitigate potential pitfalls before they become major issues.

Bridging the Knowledge Gap

It’s a common misconception that finance is the sole domain of accountants and financial analysts. In reality, every decision in a business has a financial dimension. Whether you’re in marketing, operations, HR, or any other department, your decisions will invariably impact the company’s bottom line.

The Finance for Non-Finance Managers programme is meticulously crafted to bridge this knowledge gap. It demystifies financial jargon, making it accessible and relevant to managers from all disciplines. You will delve into practical aspects, ensuring that what you learn isn’t just theoretical but immediately applicable.

A Journey of Financial Empowerment

The Finance For Non-Financial Managers course doesn’t just throw jargon and complex financial models at you. Instead, it takes you on a journey, weaving a narrative that makes financial concepts accessible and engaging. You’ll delve into real-world case studies, understanding where companies went right and where they faltered. By the end of the course, financial statements will no longer seem like cryptic documents but rather essential tools to drive your department’s success.

Consider the butterfly effect in the realm of business. A seemingly minor financial decision made by a non-financial manager can have cascading consequences throughout an organisation. Conversely, a well-informed choice can lead to exponential growth and success. This ripple effect underscores the importance of every manager, regardless of their primary role, having a grasp on finance.

The Competitive Edge

In today’s cutthroat business environment, what sets you apart? It’s your ability to anticipate challenges, seize opportunities, and drive innovation. And at the heart of all these is financial acumen. By understanding the financial implications of your decisions, you position yourself as a strategic asset to your organisation. You’re not just a manager; you’re a visionary leader who can steer the department, and by extension, the company, towards sustainable growth. The world of business is in a state of perpetual flux. The strategies that worked yesterday might be obsolete today. In such a dynamic environment, continuous learning is the key to staying relevant. The course is more than just a programme; it’s a testament to the ethos of continuous learning. It’s for the forward-thinkers, the trailblazers, and those who believe that there’s always room for growth.

Why Non-Financial Managers Must Adapt

The landscape of 2023 and beyond demands versatility from its leaders. The silos that once defined roles within a company are crumbling, making way for a more integrated and holistic approach to business. Thus, financial literacy is not just an added skill but a critical competency.

So, why finance for non-financial managers? Because in the modern business world, understanding finance is not just the domain of the finance department. It’s the cornerstone of effective, strategic, and visionary leadership. With the advent of technology, various platforms are now available to help individuals achieve their career goals. One such platform is ChatGPT. The Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbot hosted on OpenAI has become the world’s talking point. As of January 2023, it has about 100 million active users in just over a month since it launched – Instagram and TikTok can’t even compete with that – it took both platforms two-and-half years and nine months respectively to get that many users. To contribute to a growth mindset and stay ahead of the curve, Regenesys Corporate Education hosted an incredible masterclass titled: “ChatGPT: A career boost or a career bust?” on Thursday, March 9. Many eager professionals from all manner of sectors attended to learn more about the AI Chatbot and how it could impact their careers. The evening was hosted by Kapil Jaggeth, the CEO of Regenesys Corporate Education and moderated by renowned media personality Jeremy Maggs. The keynote speaker was Brett St Clair, a rebel technologist and co-founder of Teraflow.

What is ChatGPT? What can it do and can’t do?

ChatGPT (generative pre-trained transformer), created in San Francisco, is a public-use AI chatbot powered by Large Language Model (LLM) that can debate topics ranging from computer programming to history, philosophy, and so on. Although the AI chatbot’s responses are not always accurate, it has been substantially trained on a vast collection of data and information scraped from the internet and real-time discussions. Brett supports this notion by sharing some tips during the masterclass that the AI chatbot sometime ‘hallucinates’; therefore, it is often around 90% accurate. He says, “It is just a large database of the entire internet that, when prompted, will always want to find you, the user, an answer.” He shared that the AI chatbot would increase productivity 10 times more at your workplace if you apply the 30/50/20 rule. What does this mean? Previously, employees spent 90% of their time on the heavy lifting of a task, while 10% was on perfecting the work. However, with the use of ChatGPT, a task at the workplace can be broken down into the following:

30% spent briefing ChatGPT to heavy lift

50% perfection/creativity

20% peer review with ChatGPT

Unlike similar AI-powered platforms on LLMs, ChatGPT cannot generate images from texts or prompts. Brett went even further by showing us other disruptive AI tools like Midjourney. The speaker also cautioned that AI wouldn’t do all the work for you and that AI tools are only as good as their users. If you learn more about AI and how to use it effectively, tools like ChatGPT will boost your career tremendously.

What are ChatGPT prompts?

Prompts generally are a piece of text that gives instructions to language generation models to develop a response to. Irrespective of your field of work or interests, prompts are handy for automating many language-based tasks because they will save you a lot of time. For any user to get the best out of ChatGPT, understanding how to role-play and write good prompts would give you better results and improve productivity. Brett walked the audience through the process of using ChatGPT and gave some excellent examples of how it could save us time and make our jobs easier. But he also emphasised that ChatGPT is not a magic solution to all our problems. We still need to put in the work and use technology wisely with good prompts. He emphasised that an excellent prompt must be clear and concise. It can be from ‘basic prompts’ and ‘role-based prompts’ to ‘Mega prompts’. Watch the masterclass recording to see how to use these prompts.

Conclusion

Overall, the ChatGPT masterclass was a resounding success. Brett St Clair was an excellent speaker; his presentation was thought-provoking and entertaining. Attendees got to learn, network, and connect with other professionals. Attendees gained valuable insights into AI and left with a better understanding of how AI could impact their careers. However, ChatGPT is not a magic solution that will automatically boost your career like any other platform. The platform is only as effective as the effort you put into it. To truly benefit from ChatGPT, individuals must be willing to put in the time and effort required to develop their skills, network with professionals, and take advantage of the resources available. Most importantly, to stay ahead in your career, take advantage of opportunities to learn about the most recent advancements in AI and machine learning. Regenesys Corporate Education is here to awaken your potential, further your career, and take your business to new heights.

Written by Sefeoluwa Badaru.

A long-held passion here at Regenesys has been learning and development throughout one’s career.

At the heart of our Corporate Education ethos are curated corporate learning solutions that are bespoke to your company’s learning needs and trajectory, aligned to your particular learning and development requirements.

At Regenesys Corporate Education, our team takes pride in being acknowledged experts who partner with our clients, many of whom have been with us for years.

Through our mission of awakening potential, we have fostered and grown sustainable businesses and ethical leaders for over 20 years.

Contact us about partnering with your organisation today and take the next step in future-proofing your business and your talent capital.

ChatGPT: Career Boost or Bust? It’s actually up to you

The landscape of skills development in South Africa is undergoing a significant transformation, as highlighted in a recent webinar Impact on Skills Development: Exploring the Shift from SETAs to QCTO Qualifications hosted by Regenesys Corporate Education. The transition from Skills Education and Training Authorities (SETAs) to Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) qualifications marks a pivotal shift in the nation’s approach to education and training. This article delves into the key insights and takeaways from the webinar moderated by Kapil Jaggeth CEO of Regenesys Corporate Education, shedding light on the implications of this change for individuals, businesses, and the broader economy.

A New Era in Skills Development

The move towards QCTO qualifications is not merely a structural change; it represents a paradigm shift in how skills development is conceptualised and delivered. As Mr. Vijayen Naidoo, CEO of QCTO, articulated, “This transition is about streamlining the quality assurance process and responding adequately to the demands of the current job market.” The aim is to create a more coordinated approach to qualifications, ensuring they are relevant and responsive to industry needs.

One of the critical aspects discussed was the role of SETAs post-transition. Elaine Brass, CEO of HWSETA, emphasised that SETAs will continue to play a crucial role as quality partners of QCTO. They will carry out mandated functions such as qualifications development, learner registration, and assisting with final assessments. This collaboration between SETAs and QCTO is crucial for maintaining continuity and ensuring a seamless transition for all stakeholders.

Addressing Concerns and Embracing Opportunities

The webinar also addressed some of the concerns surrounding the transition. One of the main questions was about the impact on learnerships. Natalie Nelson, Senior Manager at MICT SETA, explained that while there may be challenges, particularly with longer qualifications, there is provision for an integrated learning approach that includes theoretical, practical, and workplace components. This ensures that learnerships remain a valuable and effective means of skills development.

Dr. Felleng Yende, CEO of FP&M SETA, highlighted the importance of engagement with industry stakeholders. She stressed that businesses need to be actively involved in the transition process to ensure that the new qualifications meet industry expectations and demands. This active involvement is essential for aligning the qualifications with the real-world needs of the South African economy.

Ensuring a Smooth Transition

The webinar also shed light on the mechanisms in place to ensure a smooth transition to QCTO qualifications. One of the key strategies is the development of a comprehensive framework for quality assurance. This framework aims to maintain high standards of education and training while ensuring that the qualifications are aligned with industry requirements.

Another important aspect highlighted by Kapil Jaggeth was the role of assessors and moderators in the new framework. Despite the changes, their expertise remains crucial, especially in the External Integrated Summative Assessment (EISA) centres. These centres are pivotal in evaluating learner competence and ensuring that the qualifications meet the required standards.

Challenges and Solutions

While the transition presents numerous opportunities, it also poses challenges. One of the concerns raised during the webinar was the capacity of QCTO to handle the increased responsibilities. Mr. Vijayen Naidoo acknowledged these concerns but assured that measures are being taken to enhance capacity and ensure efficient service delivery.

Furthermore, the webinar addressed the issue of funding and the duration of qualifications. The shift to a more nationalised assessment system aims to align funding models with the actual needs of the qualifications, ensuring that resources are utilised effectively.

The Future of Skills Development in South Africa

As South Africa embarks on this new chapter in skills development, the focus is on creating a system that is adaptable, responsive, and aligned with the evolving needs of the economy. The transition to QCTO qualifications is a step towards achieving this goal, as it emphasises the importance of quality assurance and industry relevance.

The collaborative efforts of SETAs, QCTO, and industry stakeholders are crucial in this journey. By working together, they can ensure that the skills development system not only meets the current demands but is also prepared for future challenges.

As the transition progresses, it is clear that ongoing dialogue and engagement with all stakeholders will be crucial. The webinar underscored the need for a collaborative approach to address challenges and leverage opportunities. The ultimate goal is to enhance the quality and relevance of skills development in South Africa, thereby contributing to economic growth and social development.

The shift from SETAs to QCTO qualifications represents a significant milestone in South Africa’s journey towards a more effective and responsive skills development system. By embracing this change and working together, stakeholders can ensure that the nation’s workforce is equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in today’s ever-evolving global economy.

Embracing Change for a Brighter Future

The transition from SETAs to QCTO qualifications is a transformative move that holds the promise of a more dynamic and effective skills development system in South Africa. The insights from the webinar highlight the importance of collaboration, quality assurance, and industry alignment in making this transition successful.

As stakeholders navigate through this change, it is essential to keep the lines of communication open, address challenges proactively, and embrace the opportunities that lie ahead. By doing so, South Africa can build a workforce that is not only skilled but also adaptable and ready to thrive in a dynamic economy.

Click Below to watch the full session and gain valuable insights on the Impact on Skills Development: Exploring the Shift from SETAs to QCTO Qualifications

Written By Thabiso Makekele

Navigating the Shift: Insights on the SETAs to QCTO Transition

By Alexandra Willis

Regenesys Corporate Education closed off #WomensMonth with a live panel discussion of women leaders across various tech fields. The discussion sat on a two-pronged conundrum: while it was inspiring to hear how women are dynamiting through technology in times of polycrisis, the conversation also promulgated critical reflection on sacrifices that have been and are made by women in the interest of progressing and leading.

The discussion was hosted by Regenesys CEO Indherani Reddy, who opened the discussion by asking if patriarchal value systems and norms had stopped them from paving their way forward. Some panellists immediately shook their heads indicating “no” while others paused for a moment and then also indicated the same. Continuing from the unanimous agreement thereof, Reddy expressed that while pervasive sexism and the metaphorical “glass ceiling” informs the experience of women in leadership positions, discourages them from taking on such positions, and, impedes career advancement for women generally, it has not stopped herself or other women. Glass is breakable, it just needs action and reaction.

The Glass Ceiling Phenomenon and Material Realities of Sexism

The “glass ceiling” is a metaphor for the invisible yet firm barrier that prevents women from rising to the highest echelons of corporate leadership irrespective of their accolades, qualifications, skills, and leadership competencies. While women may ascend to mid-level management roles, their representation diminishes significantly at the executive and board levels. While this phenomenon is partly the result of individual career choices, it is influenced by systemic biases and institutional practices that hinder women’s advancement.

Despite significant strides in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) across the world, women are still underrepresented, underpaid, and often discriminated against across industries, including tech. A 2022 report published by McKinsey found that only 86 women are promoted to manager for every 100 men across every industry, but when isolated for tech, that number drops to 52 women for every 100 men.

Moreover, in a recent report by International Data Corporation (IDC), a global market intelligence and data provider for the information technology, telecommunications, and consumer technology market, 54% of men in a surveyed sample in the tech industry indicated they felt it was likely that they’d be promoted to executive management in their company, while only 25% of women said the same. Those women who indicated that they felt they would not be promoted gave reasons of a lack of support, self-confidence, and mentorship, as well as feeling the need to “prove themselves more than men to get promoted.”

Material realties of discrimination perpetuate the intellectually dishonest argument that men are “naturally” more suited for leadership and high-responsibility roles. In the corporate world, this has translated into practices and cultures that favour male employees for promotions, higher salaries, and prestigious assignments, often at the expense of equally or more qualified female colleagues.

Reddy spoke of her experiences of “he-peated”, which is when a man repeats what a woman has offered as an idea or a solution, presents it as his own, and this is then followed by praise upon him. Reddy said that her mentor told her not to let such things slide and advised her to interrupt with “thank you for articulating my idea” and then continue the idea with reasoning backing up the idea or solution. Many nods from the panellists agreeing with Reddy suggested that they too have experiences of “he-peated”. The conversation then turned towards experiences of overt or hostile sexism and how they were dealt with. One speaker gave the example of being told (by a man who had some say in the hiring process of her appointment) that she was “lucky” to have been a “diversity hire” and went on with his sexist discourse in which he implied she was unfit for the postion. Hostile sexism, is supported by benevolent sexism, which you can read about in my article published by the Daily Maverick.

In fighting against these prejudices, a key discussion point at the event was on the importance of “finding your champions” – i.e. people in senior positions (ideally male allies) in the workplace that vouch for and support you. One aspect of the problem of under-representation of women in leadership (generally speaking) is the absence of female role models or mentors for aspiring women leaders. When women do not see others like them in top positions, it can diminish their aspirations and reinforce the concept of a glass ceiling for being unbreakable, but alas, glass is fragile and can be broken.

The Impact of Sexism and Glass Ceilings

The impact of sexism and the glass ceilings for women in corporates is multifaceted at both an individual level and on scale.

On an individual level, women experience diminished job satisfaction, lower self-esteem, and increased stress due to the constant need to prove themselves in a male-dominated environment. These pressures often lead to burnout, a reluctance to pursue higher positions, or even an exit from the corporate world altogether. Women leaders also experience “impostor syndrome” which refers to an internal struggle with a feeling of not belonging in the spaces in which one moves – which comes from being made to feel inferior or “alien” in such spaces by other people. Substantial attention was given to the topic of “imposter syndrome” by the panellists who spoke about how they have overcome it with positive internal dialog as well as from finding their “champions”.

On scale, glass ceilings contributes to the underutilisation of talent within organisations, and, the self-reproducing cycle of gender inequality in the workplace undermines efforts towards social equity and sends a discouraging message to the next generation of women entering the workforce. Moreover, organisations that fail to elevate women to leadership roles miss out on diverse perspectives and innovative ideas that can drive growth and success. Indeed, one panellist extrapolated on the ways in which women bring complex thinking to the boardroom.

Honest critical reflection points on sacrifices made by women to taking on leadership

As inspiring as it was to the hear the panellists speak on how each of them had their own story of breaking their own glass ceilings in their particular contexts, there was also some honest reflections which had inflections of sadness. One panellist spoke about how her approach to work when she was younger was “if this is going to kill me then let it be” working aggressively at the neglect of looking after her health. She disclosed that, now in her later life, she has (stress-related) stage 4 Cancer. She said: “I don’t want young women to make the same mistakes I did.” Taking encouragement from her openness and authenticity, another panellist also expressed regret for putting her everything into her work because she (at guess, now in her mid-50s) is over-run with guilt when her children speak of defining moments in their lives and say to her “but mommy, you weren’t there.” Both these panellists who spoke of the sacrifices they made to get to where they are prompted the reflective question: is it really worth it to give your whole life to a cause or an organisation? And if not, “how does one find the balance between work and all the other facets of human life? One speaker made a point to mention that men are almost never asked variations of the latter.

Breaking the Glass Ceilings: Strategies for Change

Addressing sexism in all its forms and shattering the glass ceilings requires a concerted effort from both organisations and individuals as active members of society.

Key strategies that were discussed by the panellists, include:

Actively encouraging school-going girls who express interests in STEM fields to pursue their passions, despite society continuing to support boys’ interests in the STEM fields.

Mentorship: Mentorship and finding your “champions” is generally an informal process of building interpersonal relationships in the workplace, however, official mentorship programmes that pair women with experienced leaders provide guidance, support, and networking opportunities is also critically important.

Promoting Gender-Equitable Policies: Corporations must implement and enforce policies that promote gender equality in hiring, promotions, and pay. This includes transparent processes for performance evaluations and career progression, as well as measures to prevent and address harassment and discrimination.

Fostering an Inclusive Corporate Culture Incorporating Gender-allyship : Creating an inclusive environment where diversity is valued and women feel empowered to take on leadership roles is essential. This can be achieved by promoting awareness and training programmes on unconscious bias, as well as by encouraging male allies to support gender equality initiatives, such as the United Nations’ #HeForShe campaign which stands as “an invitation for men and people of all genders to stand in solidarity with women to create a bold, visible and united force for gender equality”. Prominent organisations such as the African Development Bank, as well as famed men such as Prince Harry have openly partnered with #HeForShe. The campaign come organisation has developed gender alliance workshop material that corporates can adapt to their contexts.

Alexandra Willis is a Skills Writer at Regenesys Corporate Education.

Women’s Empowerment: Shattering “Glass Ceilings” Because Glass is Breakable

In every World Cup, there comes a point where talent is insufficient.

By the time two teams reach the final, every player is technically gifted. Every coach has analysed hours of footage. Every weakness has been studied, every opportunity rehearsed, and every tactical adjustment debated.

The difference rarely comes down to ability alone. It often comes down to leadership.

As millions of people ask the same question, Who will win the World Cup?, business leaders should perhaps be asking a different one.

What can the world's biggest sporting stage teach us about leading under pressure?

The answer is simple. Quite a lot.

Great teams don't become great overnight

This year's World Cup has reinforced an important truth. The teams competing for the trophy are not surprise contenders. They are among the world's highest-ranked sides, and for good reason. Their success is the result of years of investment in talent development, disciplined coaching, clear leadership and a shared identity. Rankings are earned through consistency, not moments of brilliance.

The same principle applies in business.

High-performing organisations rarely arrive at the top by chance. They build strong leadership pipelines, invest in developing people and create cultures where accountability, adaptability and collaboration become part of everyday performance.

The lesson is clear. Sustainable success is built long before the biggest stage arrives.

Great teams don't rely on star performers

Every tournament begins with conversations about individual brilliance. The fastest striker. The most creative midfielder. The goalkeeper capable of impossible saves.

Yet as the competition progresses, a familiar pattern emerges.

The teams that consistently advance aren't necessarily those with the biggest stars. They are the ones where every individual understands their role, trusts the system, and performs for the collective. The same is true in business. High-performing organisations are built on aligned teams rather than isolated talent. Leaders who create clarity, accountability and shared purpose consistently outperform those who rely on a handful of exceptional individuals.

Leadership is less about having the smartest person in the room. It is about enabling everyone else to perform at their best.

Pressure reveals leadership

Football offers no room for excuses. One mistake might change everything. Under that level of pressure, technical ability remains important, but composure becomes invaluable.

The best leaders don't eliminate uncertainty. They create confidence within it.

Whether managing a penalty shootout or steering an organisation through economic disruption, leadership is measured by the ability to remain calm, make informed decisions, communicate clearly and inspire belief when outcomes remain uncertain.

In today's business environment, uncertainty is no longer the exception. It is the operating environment.

Strategy wins before the whistle

Supporters see ninety minutes, extra time and penalties. Coaches, on the other hand, see months, and sometimes years, of preparation. Every substitution, formation change and tactical decision is rooted in planning long before match day. There are also potential injuries to consider so coaches must empower all players to step up when required.

Organisations often celebrate execution while overlooking preparation.

Successful leaders understand that sustainable performance comes from investing in capability before it is urgently needed.

The organisations adapting most successfully to artificial intelligence, digital transformation and changing markets are those that prepared early, not those reacting once disruption arrived.

Leadership is proactive before it is reactive.

Resilience separates finalists from champions

No team reaches a World Cup final without setbacks.

There are difficult moments, unexpected injuries, controversial decisions and matches that demand extraordinary resilience. Champions aren't remembered because everything went according to plan. They are remembered because they responded when it didn't. Business leaders face similar realities. Markets shift. Strategies evolve. Technology disrupts. Economic conditions change.

Resilient leaders don't view setbacks as failures. They treat them as information, adapt quickly and keep moving towards long-term objectives.

Resilience has become one of leadership's most valuable competitive advantages.

The best captains never play alone

The image of a captain lifting the trophy is iconic. Every captain knows the trophy belongs to the team.

Leadership isn't about standing in front but rather about creating the conditions for others to succeed. Modern leadership has shifted from command and control to coaching, collaboration and influence.

The most effective leaders ask better questions, develop future leaders and build cultures where people take ownership rather than simply follow instructions. That mindset creates organisations capable of sustaining success long after one individual has moved on.

So, who will win?

The truth is that predicting the winner is difficult.

Football has a remarkable habit of rewarding discipline, resilience and collective belief just as often as individual brilliance. The team that lifts the trophy will almost certainly be the one that adapts fastest, communicates best under pressure, trusts its preparation and leads with conviction when the stakes are highest.

Those are exactly the qualities that define exceptional organisations. The World Cup reminds us that leadership is never a theory. It is demonstrated through decisions, behaviours and the ability to bring people together around a common purpose.

Whether you're chasing football's greatest prize or leading organisational transformation, success is rarely determined by talent alone. It is determined by leadership.

Leadership isn't built on match day

The teams competing for football's biggest prize did not become world-class when the tournament began. They arrived prepared. Their rankings reflect years of deliberate investment in leadership, culture and performance. Organisations that aspire to lead their industries should take the same approach. Leadership excellence is not built in moments of pressure. It is built long before they arrive.

At Regenesys Corporate Education, our leadership development programmes help executives and emerging leaders build the capabilities needed to lead through complexity, inspire high-performing teams and make confident decisions in an increasingly uncertain world.

When the pressure is highest, leadership becomes your greatest competitive advantage.

This “spirit” is characterised by the qualities of being resilient, analytical, assertive, passionate and knowing her worth and why she is in the position that she is. Tresella Nayager, one of the course designers, articulates that “women in leadership” is “a field on its own within leadership and management which different countries approach differently, but all agree that the reason for its existence is because women are not given their rightful place in business and leadership roles, especially at the top, specifically executive management, C-suit level positions”. This comes from discrimination against women over generations. Training women for leadership through programmes such as its own, Regenesys aims to address this gap.

The course is aimed at developing healthy inner-dialogs of women leaders to foster resilience in overcoming and fighting against the hurdles specific to women in the workplace such as unconscious biases, microaggressions, and unequal pay.

Unequal pay, Microaggressions and Mansplaining

Africa has a median gender pay gap between 23% and 35%, which is higher than the global average of 20%. Women also experience bias and discrimination in the workplace not only in the form of unequal pay, but also microaggressions and sexual harassment. Women of colour, face double bias of race and gender, including a lack of access to capital as well as racial prejudices of scepticism of the concept of black excellence. When men over-explain things that women know already, it’s called “mansplaining”, see the book Glass Ceilings Women in SA media, published by GenderLinks (2018) for examples of this patronising tendency, which is plain sexism.

Dr Penny Law, Co-founder and Executive Director of Regenesys explains that “we operate in a workplace that’s influenced by unconscious bias. When women express their opinions strongly, the general perception is that they are aggressive. On the other hand, when men express their opinions strongly, they are perceived as being assertive. A women’s contribution in a meeting, is sometimes overlooked. However, when a man makes exactly the same point a few minutes later, he is not only acknowledged but deemed to have made an important contribution. When men speak, people listen. The experience of micro aggressions could lead to women experiencing imposter syndrome because they don’t feel they belong[…] The fight for gender equality is complex as the effects of patriarchy are systemic.”

Warrior-spirited women must lead with their male allies.

If we consider that men are still the prime beneficiaries of the status-quo of the existing social order, then empowering women is, in part, men’s work. That is, men need to take on the role of being allies. When men advocate for women in leadership, they’re more likely to be taken seriously than if it were only women rallying behind other women, according to a 2014 study published by Wiley.

An ally is defined as a “person who holds a position of privilege and power and can advocate and take action to support [an underrepresented] group without taking over their voice”. For Regenesys Corporate Education CEO Kapil Jaggeth, being an ally is “an on-going commitment that requires continuous support and learning, awareness, self-reflection and most importantly, action”. He further elucidates that acting means being a person who does things for the person(s) of whom one considers themselves an ally. Women who face gender-based barriers to success, need learning solutions that are tailored to their particular experiences and contexts.

Women leaders can also empower one another through networking and learning together. There is also the argument, that because men hold more than 90% of the top position, they can play a role, be a bit self-reflexive and make way, or room at the table. In an era where technological advancement is accelerating at a pace that leaves even the most agile businesses gasping for breath, the role of middle-level management is facing a seismic shift. Hold on to your seats, because the very essence of middle management is being redefined. She works at a multinational corporation, overseeing a team of talented individuals spread across different continents. In the past, her role involved mainly coordination and supervision. However, today, Sarah finds herself analysing vast datasets to make data-driven decisions that impact her team’s performance. She’s no longer just a supervisor; she’s a data interpreter. Sarah’s responsibilities extend beyond her team’s performance. She is now responsible for leveraging technology to streamline processes, optimise resource allocation, and identify growth opportunities. She has become a strategic thinker, using data analytics and AI to drive innovation and gain a competitive advantage for her organisation.

The traditional image of middle managers as supervisors, mediators, and intermediaries is fading into the past. The Future of Middle Management: Adapting to a Changing Landscape

In an ever-shifting landscape, new managers face a daunting reality. The path to success is riddled with challenges, but merely surviving won’t cut it. Let us uncover the keys to leadership triumph and explore the essential skills required to excel as a New Manager.

A staggering 60% of new managers underperform or fail within their first two years, according to recent research. In an age marked by innovation and constant change, lacking the right skills isn’t just detrimental—it’s career-ending. So, how do you not just survive but thrive in your new role? Let’s dive in.

Self-Awareness: The Managerial Mirror

Self-awareness is a cornerstone of effective leadership, yet it remains one of the most misunderstood concepts. It’s not merely about understanding your preferences or being aware of your emotional responses; it’s a deeper process that involves multiple layers of consciousness. At the core of self-awareness is the capacity to look inward to understand your motivations, beliefs, and values. It’s an ongoing process that requires commitment and emotional labour.

Consider the Johari Window, a model that identifies four quadrants of self: the Open Self, Hidden Self, Blind Self, and Unknown Self. As a manager, your goal should be to expand your Open Self by soliciting feedback, being transparent with your team, and investing in self-reflection.

Keeping a reflection journal isn’t merely a ‘quick tip’—it’s an essential practice. Documenting your thoughts, reactions, and decisions after key events or interactions allows you to dissect your cognitive and emotional processes. Over time, this journal becomes a mirror reflecting your managerial growth, helping you identify blind spots or biases that may be affecting your leadership.

Conscious Leadership: Beyond the Profit Margin

In 2024, conscious leadership isn’t a buzzword—it’s a paradigm shift. Leadership has transcended the boundaries of just profit and loss statements to embrace a more holistic ethos that considers the quadruple bottom line: People, Planet, Profit and Purpose. This isn’t a fad but a survival mechanism for companies aiming for long-term sustainability.

Conscious leadership requires an intricate understanding of the various components of your ecosystem. From supply chain ethics to the mental well-being of your employees, every decision creates ripples that affect the whole system. Adopting the quadruple bottom line approach is not a “Pro Tip,” but a fundamental restructuring of your managerial philosophy.

Your role as a conscious leader goes beyond being ethical; it means embedding responsible practices in your team’s DNA. Your metrics for success should not only focus on revenue but should also account for the social and environmental capital you’re either building or depleting.

Emotional Intelligence: The Unsung Hero

In a dynamic work environment filled with diverse personalities and high-stress situations, emotional intelligence is often what differentiates a good manager from a great one. While IQ may give you the analytical skills to solve complex problems, EQ equips you with the social skills to navigate the complex web of human emotions.

Emotional intelligence isn’t something you switch on when it’s convenient; it should be a constant undercurrent in all your interactions. Whether you’re conducting performance reviews or mediating team conflicts, your ability to manage and utilise emotions constructively is crucial.

Implementing emotional check-ins at team meetings is more than a simple “Action Step”; it’s a strategy to build a culture of empathy. These check-ins serve as safe spaces for team members to express how they’re truly feeling, not just about projects but about the overall work environment. This practice creates a feedback loop that not only helps you tailor your management style but also contributes to team cohesion and mental well-being.

The Art of Crucial Conversations

Effective communication is indeed more than the exchange of information; it’s an art form that involves empathy, tact, and timing. According to the State of Business Communication 2023 report, 43% of business leaders claim that poor communication decreases productivity.

Mastering the art of crucial conversations involves more than just active listening; it necessitates a holistic understanding of the situation and the parties involved. You’re not merely a conduit for messages but a mediator of emotions, expectations, and outcomes.

Active listening isn’t a ‘Skill Booster’ but a foundational skill. When you genuinely listen—taking time to understand not just what is being said, but also what is left unsaid—you create an environment of trust. The practice of ‘reflective listening,‘ where you mirror back what you’ve heard, can be particularly effective in sensitive conversations. This ensures clarity and shows the other person that they have been genuinely heard and understood.

Dynamics of a New Manager: The Glue That Holds Everything Together

In the context of a Gallup poll, managers accounted for at least 70% of variances in employee engagement scores. As a new manager, you hold the metaphorical ‘remote control’ to your team’s morale and productivity. Understanding team dynamics goes beyond identifying individual strengths and weaknesses; it involves creating synergies that make the collective output greater than the sum of individual efforts.

The concept of ‘strength mapping‘ isn’t a ‘Best Practice’; it’s a necessity. It involves a detailed analysis, often facilitated by assessments like Gallup’s StrengthsFinder or the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, to identify not just what each team member is good at but also how those strengths can be orchestrated to achieve team goals.

Understanding Project Management: Beyond Gantt Charts

As work settings become increasingly virtual, with a little over 40% of employers working from home today according to Forbes, the project management landscape is evolving at a breakneck pace. In this virtual realm, the scope of project management extends beyond Gantt charts and timelines to include virtual team dynamics, asynchronous communication, and digital project management tools.

The ‘Golden Rule’ of having a contingency plan is really a Bronze Rule in today’s complex, adaptive systems. Risk management methodologies, like the Risk Register or SWOT analysis, should be integral parts of your project planning. This goes beyond merely ‘expecting the unexpected’; it’s about categorising and prioritising risks, assigning ownership, and developing mitigation strategies.

Foundations in Finance: No, It’s Not Just for Accountants

Managers are responsible for making financial decisions that can impact their organisations. Surveys have shown that a considerable number of managers lack a comprehensive understanding of corporate finance, which can hinder effective decision-making. Yet, as a manager, you’re accountable for the budgets that power your projects and initiatives. Your competency in finance isn’t an ‘extra’ but a fundamental skill that directly correlates with your ability to make impactful decisions.

Learning to calculate financial ratios like profitability and liquidity isn’t ‘Quick Math’; it’s a toolset for strategic planning. Familiarising yourself with concepts like earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA), Cash Flow, and Working Capital doesn’t just ‘impress the CFO’; it gives you the acumen to align your team’s objectives with the company’s financial goals.

The Evolutionary Blueprint for Tomorrow’s Leaders

Navigating the labyrinth of managerial responsibilities today is no small feat. It requires a comprehensive skill set, ongoing learning, and the resilience to adapt in an ever-evolving corporate landscape. To echo the words of Peter Drucker, “Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things.” As you ascend the corporate ladder, your aim should be to excel at both.

If you’re committed to not just surviving but thriving in your role as a new manager, ongoing education and self-improvement are not optional; they’re essential. From developing self-awareness to mastering finance, each skill contributes to your efficacy as a manager, making you a valuable asset in any organisation’s journey towards long-term success.

Don’t Just Climb the Ladder, Own It! Boldly Hers: Women in Leadership

An astounding 73% of global investors stated that they would not invest in a company that isn’t attuned to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors.

This statistic isn’t just startling, but it’s a clear testament to a seismic shift in the investment landscape. If you’re still contemplating the tangible merits of integrating ESG into your business framework, prepare to be enlightened.

In the age of information, transparency is not just an option, but a mandate. Companies are no longer judged solely on their profitability. Stakeholders, from investors to customers, demand businesses to be socially responsible, environmentally conscious, and governed with integrity. Yet, beyond the obvious and often-cited benefits of ESG – such as positive public image and long-term sustainability – lies a treasure trove of unspoken advantages that the most successful corporations have already tapped into.

1. Enhanced Operational Efficiency and Cost Savings

Contrary to the misconceived notion that sustainability requires significant investment, ESG initiatives often lead to cost savings. When a company shifts towards energy-efficient operations or waste reduction, not only do they contribute positively to the environment, but they also witness a reduction in utility bills and waste disposal costs.

2. Talent Attraction and Retention

Top talent today prioritises working for companies that uphold values aligning with theirs. Research indicates that employees in ESG-committed companies report higher morale, commitment, and overall satisfaction. This not only reduces recruitment costs but also fosters innovation, given that motivated employees often birth revolutionary ideas.

3. Risk Mitigation

Regulatory penalties, lawsuits, and reputational damages are just a few risks businesses face today. By being ESG-compliant, businesses can potentially steer clear of these pitfalls. Moreover, companies practising ESG principles have shown to possess superior management quality, further reducing operational risks.

4. Access to Capital and Better Loan Terms

As investors become increasingly ESG-aware, businesses demonstrating a strong commitment stand a better chance of securing investments. Banks, too, often offer favourable loan terms to such companies, given their reduced risk profiles.

5. Long-Term Competitive Advantage

With ever-growing consumer consciousness, companies invested in ESG are more likely to foster brand loyalty. Their proactive approach helps them anticipate and adapt to regulatory changes, ensuring that they are always a step ahead of their competitors.

6. Enhanced Customer Loyalty

In a world burgeoning with choices, brand loyalty is harder to attain than ever. Yet, companies who transparently showcase their ESG endeavours witness a surge in customer fidelity. Today’s discerning consumers prefer brands that not just sell, but also stand for a cause. By integrating ESG into their core values, companies resonate with these consumers, fostering a bond that transcends transactional interactions.

7. Spurring Innovation

Embracing ESG often drives businesses to rethink their strategies, products, and services. This culture of continuous evolution becomes a hotbed for innovation. Companies such as Unilever and Patagonia, stalwarts in their commitment to sustainability, regularly churn out innovative products that are not only eco-friendly but also cater to an ever-growing niche of environmentally-conscious consumers.

8. Strengthening Supply Chain

An often-under looked advantage of ESG commitment is its positive impact on the supply chain. Companies that advocate sustainability and ethical practices often collaborate with suppliers holding similar values. This alignment strengthens the supply chain, reduces disruptions, and ensures a smoother flow of operations.

How to Implement ESG into your business

While these benefits offer a compelling reason for corporations to take the ESG plunge, the journey can be intricate. How can a business ensure they are implementing ESG correctly and not just “greenwashing“? How can they reap maximum advantages while genuinely making a difference?

Begin with a Self-assessment: Recognise where you currently stand in terms of ESG. Understand your strengths and pinpoint areas of improvement.

Engage Stakeholders: ESG isn’t a boardroom agenda. From employees to suppliers, engage all stakeholders in the journey.

Set Clear Objectives: Like any business function, your ESG initiatives should have clear, measurable objectives.

while ESG might seem like the latest buzzword, its impact on businesses is undeniable. The unspoken benefits, from operational efficiency to risk mitigation, offer not just a competitive edge but also ensure the long-term viability of businesses.

Charting your ESG journey:

To truly excel in the realm of ESG, corporations must adopt a three-pronged approach: Continuous Monitoring and Reporting:, Embracing Technology, and Staying Updated.

Continuous Monitoring and Reporting: Establishing ESG initiatives isn’t enough. Regular monitoring and transparent reporting of ESG practices ensure accountability and continuous improvement.

Embrace Technology: With advancements in AI and data analytics, there are now tools available that can aid in monitoring, reporting, and even predicting ESG trends. Embracing these can vastly streamline your ESG endeavours.

Stay Updated: The world of ESG is dynamic, with evolving benchmarks and expectations. Regular training and updates, through ESG programmes, can ensure that your corporation remains at the forefront of ESG excellence.

In essence, the case for ESG is clear and compelling. 8 Unspoken Benefits of ESG for Corporations

85% of financial success is due to skills in ‘human engineering’, personality, and ability to communicate, negotiate, and lead. Imagine walking into a meeting, and instead of the usual tension, you’re met with a sense of understanding and collaboration. This is the power of Emotional Intelligence at work. It’s not just about being aware of your emotions but also understanding and influencing the emotions of others. It’s not just about being empathetic or a good listener; it’s a complex amalgamation of self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills. These components are often undervalued, yet they are the bedrock of successful leadership and effective team dynamics.

The Components of Emotional Intelligence

Self-Awareness: The Foundation of EQ

Self-awareness, the cornerstone of EQ, involves understanding your emotions, strengths, weaknesses, and drives. Leaders with high self-awareness are more adept at handling workplace dynamics and are better decision-makers. For instance, a study by Green Peak Partners found that high self-awareness correlates with a company’s profitability and efficiency.

Self-Regulation: Steering Through Storms

Business leaders often face situations requiring immediate response and long-term vision. Self-regulation, which involves controlling or redirecting disruptive emotions and adapting to changing circumstances, proves vital here. It ensures leaders can make balanced decisions without being clouded by temporary emotions or biases.

Motivation: The Inner Drive

Intrinsic motivation, a key component of EQ, is about being driven to achieve for the sake of achievement. This aspect of EQ is particularly significant in the business world. A motivated leader inspires others, driving their team to achieve more and fostering a high-performance culture.

Empathy: The Connective Tissue in Corporate Relationships

Empathy, the ability to understand and share the feelings of another, is crucial in today’s globalised business environment. It aids in building and nurturing relationships, understanding team dynamics, and resolving conflicts. Empathetic leaders are often more effective in negotiations, customer relations, and all facets of people management.

Social Skills: Navigating the Social Labyrinth of Business

The final component of EQ, social skills, refers to the skills needed to manage relationships and build networks. Leaders with strong social skills are excellent at managing teams and communicating effectively, making them invaluable in any corporate setting.

How to Develop Emotional Intelligence

While some people may be naturally more emotionally intelligent, the great news is EQ can be developed and honed. Here are some suggestions:

Self-Reflection: Regularly take time to reflect on your own emotional reactions and understand why they occur.

Active Listening: Truly listen to what others are saying without immediately responding or judging.

Feedback Seeking: Openly ask for and be receptive to feedback from colleagues and mentors.

Empathy Practice: Make a conscious effort to understand things from others’ perspectives.

Stress Management: Develop techniques to manage stress and remain calm under pressure.

Developing EQ is not an overnight feat. It’s a continuous journey, one that involves consistent self-reflection, practice, and feedback. Training programmes, like those offered by Regenesys Corporate Education, play a crucial role in this development process. They provide the necessary tools and environments to nurture and enhance these skills, blending theoretical knowledge with practical application.

Emotional Intelligence: The Future of Business Leadership

As we move forward in this fast-paced, ever-evolving business world, the importance of EQ only magnifies. Companies that recognise and invest in developing emotional intelligence among their leaders and teams are poised for greater success, resilience, and sustainability.

One often overlooked aspect of emotional intelligence is its impact on employee retention. In an era where the cost of employee turnover is staggeringly high, retaining talented individuals becomes a key concern for businesses. Leaders with high emotional intelligence are more likely to create a work environment that values and nurtures its employees, leading to higher job satisfaction and loyalty.

A supportive work environment is one where employees feel their emotional needs are understood and respected. This includes recognising achievements, providing constructive feedback, and offering opportunities for professional growth. Such an environment not only boosts morale but also encourages long-term commitment to the company.

The Transformative Impact of Emotional Intelligence Training

Delving deeper into the realm of EQ development, it’s important to understand the transformative impact that structured training can have. Programmes like those offered by Regenesys Corporate Education are designed not only to impart knowledge but also to foster a profound change in attitude and perspective. This holistic approach ensures that the lessons learned transcend beyond the classroom, embedding themselves into the very fabric of an organisation’s culture.

The Synergy of EQ and Technical Skills

While EQ accounts for a significant portion of success in the corporate world, it doesn’t diminish the importance of technical skills. Instead, it complements them. For instance, a manager proficient in financial analysis is far more effective when they can present their findings empathetically and motivate their team to achieve common goals. This synergy of EQ and technical skills creates a well-rounded, impactful leader.

The Benefits of Emotional Intelligence in Organisations

In sales or client management roles, emotional intelligence is paramount. Being able to read a client’s non-verbal cues and understanding their emotional state can help tailor your approach, making your interactions more successful and meaningful.

The benefits of high EQ in leadership ripple throughout an organisation. Teams led by emotionally intelligent leaders often exhibit higher engagement, reduced turnover, and increased productivity. This positive environment fosters creativity and innovation, essential for businesses to thrive in today’s competitive market.

Challenges in Developing Emotional Intelligence

Developing EQ is not without its challenges. It requires a willingness to be vulnerable, to engage in introspective reflection, and to confront potentially uncomfortable truths about oneself. However, the growth that comes from this process is invaluable, both for personal development and professional advancement.

How to Build a Culture of Emotional Intelligence

Creating a culture of emotional intelligence starts at the top. When leaders model emotionally intelligent behaviour, it sets a precedent for the entire organisation. This involves transparent communication, showing genuine concern for employees’ well-being, and making decisions that consider the emotional impact on the workforce.

Emotional intelligence is also key in fostering diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Leaders who are emotionally intelligent are better equipped to understand and value diverse perspectives and backgrounds, creating an inclusive environment where all employees feel valued and understood.

The Future of EQ in Business Education

Innovation thrives in environments where people feel safe to express their ideas and take risks. A leader with high EQ creates such an environment by fostering trust and open communication. When team members feel their contributions are valued and their workplace is supportive, they are more likely to share creative solutions and innovative ideas.

Looking forward, the integration of EQ training in business education is becoming increasingly important. As the corporate world evolves, the demand for leaders who can navigate complex emotional landscapes is on the rise. Business schools like Regenesys Corporate Education, which focus on holistic development are at the forefront of this evolution, shaping the leaders of tomorrow.

Investing in Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence is not just a ‘nice-to-have’ attribute for business leaders—it’s a critical component of effective leadership, team management, and overall business success. As we harness and develop these skills within our teams and leaders, we unlock new levels of potential, paving the way for innovation, growth, and lasting success in the corporate world.

Emotional intelligence is more than a business buzzword; it’s a fundamental skill set for anyone aspiring to lead and succeed in today’s corporate world. By investing in emotional intelligence, you’re not just investing in individual skills but in the future of your entire organisation.

The journey to developing EQ is ongoing, but the rewards – both personal and professional – are immense.
